What Chiefy can and can't access
Chiefy works inside the mailbox you connect — it reads your email to help you, and it writes drafts. It never sends, deletes, or shares anything without an action from you, and you can cut off access at any time by disconnecting the mailbox in Settings.
Chiefy is your assistant inside Gmail and Outlook. To do its job — Smart Drafts, Smart Summaries, Auto Labels, and Ask Chiefy — it needs to read the email in the mailbox you connect, and to create and update drafts on your behalf. This page explains exactly what that access covers, where it stops, and the things Chiefy will only ever do when you ask.
What Chiefy can access
When you connect a mailbox, you grant Chiefy permission to:
- Read your email — so it can summarize threads, sort them with Auto Labels, and pull the context it needs to draft a reply in your voice.
- Create, update, and send drafts — so it can prepare replies and new emails. Sending only happens when you choose to send.
That access is scoped to the mailbox you connected. Chiefy does not reach into anything outside of mail and, when enabled, calendar.
What Chiefy can’t access
Chiefy’s permissions stop at your mailbox and your calendar. It has no access to your other accounts, your files, your contacts outside of email, or any service you haven’t explicitly connected. Connecting one mailbox gives Chiefy access to that mailbox only — each account you add is a separate connection you approve yourself.
Calendar access
Calendar Integration is a separate, opt-in connection — it’s never granted when you first sign in. You connect your calendar with a one-time Connect Google Calendar step, which Chiefy offers in Ask Chiefy the first time it needs scheduling context. Once connected, Chiefy can check your availability and, when you ask, create or update calendar events — for example, when a thread is about finding a time to meet and you want a draft that proposes one. If you don’t connect your calendar, Chiefy has no access to it at all.
What Chiefy never does on its own
A few things only ever happen because you chose them:
- Chiefy never sends an email automatically. Smart Drafts — including its automatic Autodraft mode — only ever prepare a draft. It waits in your mailbox until you review and send it. Chiefy will only send for you when you explicitly tell it to, such as asking Ask Chiefy to send a draft you’ve approved.
- Chiefy never shares your email with an outside AI service on its own. Your mailbox data stays within Chiefy as it works.
The one place email content leaves Chiefy is when you use Chiefy inside ChatGPT. In that case, the email content needed to answer your request is sent to OpenAI to fulfill it — because you’ve asked ChatGPT to do the work. That flow is described in our privacy policy, and you control it from your ChatGPT settings, including disconnecting Chiefy there whenever you want.
If you use Chiefy only inside Gmail or Outlook, the ChatGPT flow never applies — there’s nothing to turn off.
Granular permissions in ChatGPT
When you connect Chiefy as an app inside ChatGPT, the connection is broken into five separate permissions, shown on the approval screen, so the access is explicit rather than all-or-nothing:
- Read your emails, threads, and briefs
- Manage your inbox (labels, read status)
- Read your draft replies
- Create and edit draft replies
- Send emails on your behalf
This is the access ChatGPT is granted on your behalf. You can review or revoke it any time from your ChatGPT app settings.
Turning access off
You’re always in control of the connection. To stop Chiefy from reading or writing in a mailbox, disconnect it.

Go to Settings → Integrations → Connected Mailboxes. (You can reach Settings from the Settings item in the Chiefy side-panel menu, which opens the web app, or go to app.chiefy.com directly.) Find the account, open its overflow menu (⋯), and choose Disconnect. That pauses all reading, drafting, and sync for that mailbox; anything already synced is kept, and you can reconnect later. If you want to remove the email Chiefy has already synced, that’s a separate step — see Delete your data or revoke access.
Rolling out. Connected Mailboxes is available to a limited set of accounts while we roll it out. If you don’t see it yet, you can still revoke Chiefy’s access from your email provider’s account settings, or delete your Chiefy account.
The mailbox you use to sign in to Chiefy can’t be disconnected on its own — it’s tied to your login. To remove it, you delete your Chiefy account.
