Smart Summaries limits
Smart Summaries comes with a monthly quota. Once you’ve used it up, asking for a new summary returns a “limit reached” message until your quota resets. Summaries you’ve already generated stay available, and your plan determines how many you get.
Chiefy caps how many summaries you can generate each month. The cap is there to keep usage fair, and for most people it’s far more than a typical month of email needs. When you reach it, Chiefy stops generating new summaries until the quota resets — but everything you’ve already summarized stays exactly where it is.
How the limit works
Your summary quota is counted per account, per month. Every time Chiefy generates a new summary for you, that counts as one against your monthly total.
A few things to know:
- Re-opening an existing summary doesn’t count. Asking for a summary of a thread Chiefy has already summarized just shows the saved version — it doesn’t spend another summary.
- The quota is tied to your plan. Higher plans get a much larger monthly allowance.
- The count resets each month. Once your window rolls over, your full allowance is available again.
What happens when you hit the limit
When you’ve used your monthly allowance and ask for a new summary, Chiefy can’t generate it. Instead of a summary you’ll see a message telling you the limit has been reached, along with where your usage currently stands for the month.
This affects new summaries only. Any thread you’ve already summarized stays available to re-open at no cost.
Reaching the limit won’t break anything else in Chiefy. The rest of your features keep working normally — only new summary generation pauses until your quota resets.
What to do when you hit the limit
If you’ve reached your monthly summary limit, you have a few options:
- Wait for the reset. Your quota refreshes at the start of your next monthly window, and new summaries work again automatically.
- Re-use what you have. Summaries you’ve already generated don’t count against your quota, so you can keep opening those freely.
- Upgrade your plan for a much larger monthly allowance if you regularly run out. See Upgrade, downgrade, or cancel.
Automatic summaries and your quota
Some summaries happen in the background rather than from a button you tap — for example, while Chiefy is preparing a draft for a thread. These automatic summaries draw from the same monthly allowance.
The difference is in how a limit is handled. When you tap to summarize and you’re out of quota, Chiefy tells you directly. When a background summary would go over the limit, Chiefy simply skips it quietly rather than interrupting you — so you won’t see an error from work happening behind the scenes.
If you notice a thread that didn’t get an automatic summary near the end of your month, a reached quota is one likely reason. It will resume on its own once your quota resets.
