The Chiefy icon is missing in Gmail

TL;DR

The Chiefy icon lives in Gmail’s top toolbar and opens the side panel. If it’s missing, the most common causes are that the extension lost site access to Gmail or that the Gmail tab needs a reload. The icon appears whether or not you’re signed in, so a sign-in prompt in the panel is a separate thing. Work through the checks below in order.

The Chiefy icon is the toolbar button at the top of Gmail. Click it to open or close the Chiefy side panel. When it’s missing, Chiefy usually loaded but couldn’t place the button — or it isn’t running on the page at all. The steps below start with the quickest fixes.

Make sure it’s the icon that’s missing, not the panel

The toolbar button appears whether or not you’re signed in — signing in isn’t what places the icon. What sign-in changes is the panel’s contents: until you finish signing in, opening the panel shows a sign-in prompt instead of the assistant. So if Chiefy seems “missing,” first check whether it’s really the icon that’s gone or just the panel that isn’t doing anything yet.

Open the side panel — either by clicking the Chiefy icon if it’s visible, or from Gmail’s side panel rail on the right — and see what you get. If the panel opens but shows a sign-in screen, the icon is fine; finish signing in and you’re set. If there’s no icon and no way to open the panel at all, continue with the checks below. See Connect Gmail or Outlook for the sign-in walkthrough.

Reload Gmail

If the icon was there before and then disappeared, the most likely cause is that the page lost its connection to the extension — for example, after Chiefy updated in the background or a tab sat idle for a long time. Chiefy watches Gmail’s toolbar and re-adds its button automatically when Gmail rebuilds that part of the page, but a stale tab can miss it.

A full reload fixes this. Refresh the Gmail tab (or close it and open a new one) and give the page a moment to finish loading. The icon should reappear once Chiefy reinitializes.

Check the extension’s site access

Chiefy can only add its icon if it’s allowed to run on Gmail. If site access was changed — or never granted — the button won’t appear.

  1. Open your extensions list

In Chrome, open Settings → Extensions, or go to chrome://extensions in the address bar.

  2. Open Chiefy's details

Find Chiefy in the list and select Details.

  3. Check Site access A

Under Site access, make sure it’s set to On all sites or, at minimum, allowed on mail.google.com. If it’s set to On click, the icon may not appear until you grant access.

    Chrome · Extensions → Chiefy → Details

    Site access A

On all sites — Chiefy can run on mail.google.com

Extensions → Chiefy → Details → Site access set to all sites or mail.google.com.
  4. Reload Gmail

After changing site access, refresh your Gmail tab so Chiefy can load and place its icon.

Still not showing? Check the browser console

If the icon is still missing after the steps above, the page console can tell you why. Gmail occasionally changes its own layout, which can stop Chiefy from finding the spot where its button belongs.

  1. Open DevTools

In your Gmail tab, open the browser DevTools and go to the Console tab.

  2. Look for Chiefy messages

Reload Gmail and watch the console. A warning that the toolbar container wasn’t found is a sign that Gmail’s layout changed and Chiefy couldn’t place its button — that’s something for our team to fix, not a setting on your end.

If you see a console warning about the toolbar, send it to support along with your browser version. It helps us catch Gmail layout changes quickly.

In rare cases the button is added to the toolbar but its logo doesn’t load, so you see an empty or blank spot where the icon should be rather than nothing at all. Clicking that spot still opens the panel. A reload of Gmail usually restores the logo; if it doesn’t, reach out to support.

When to contact support

If you’ve signed in, reloaded Gmail, confirmed site access, and the icon still won’t appear, contact support. Include your browser and version, whether you saw any console warnings, and whether the side panel itself opens. That tells us whether the issue is the button, the panel, or the page.
